White House warns US FDA budget cuts would severely limit agency

The White House has expressed concern over legislation passed by the House of Representatives on 16 June that seeks to cut the US Food and Drug Administration's discretionary funding for fiscal year 2012 by $285 million, or 11.5% below FY 2011's level1,2. If the Senate adopts the bill, the funding level in the legislation and the resulting staff reductions will severely limit the FDA’s ability to protect the public’s health and ensure that medical products and food are safe, the White House Office of Management and Budget has warned
